Irie Idea Studio

When COVID shut everything down in 2020, I lost gigs, tours, and my bar shifts in the same week.

Up until then, I’d been working out of a shared studio. When everything stopped, I decided it was time to build my own space.

And that’s how Irie Idea Studio began.

I built this studio to be a place where artists can relax and make great records.

The room combines the flexibility of modern recording with the warmth and character of analog gear. Everything runs through carefully chosen hardware before it reaches the computer, giving me the sound I love without slowing down the creative process.

The space is acoustically treated for accurate listening, but it never feels clinical. Natural light, plants, comfortable seating, and a relaxed atmosphere make it a place where bands actually enjoy spending time.

Whether you’re recording a single vocal, tracking a full band, or mixing a finished record, the studio is designed to keep the focus where it belongs: On the music.

The Setup

I record in Pro Tools and Logic, but the computer is only part of the process.

My studio is a hybrid of digital and analog. Analog interfaces, outboard compressors, EQs, analog summing, and some legendary digital effects processors that have been shaping records since the ’70s. Everything runs through the hardware before it hits the software. That’s how I get the warmth and character I’m looking for.

Some people love talking about compressors, EQs, and preamps. Some people never want to think about them.

I’m happy either way.

Your job is to make music. Mine is to make it sound great.

Meet the newest member of the studio

Toft Audio ATB 32 (Rev 3), I’ve wanted this board for a long time.

The Toft Audio ATB 32 (Rev 3) is a vintage-style British console inspired by the same design philosophy behind records I’ve loved my entire life. Its preamps add weight and character. The EQs are incredibly musical. And because everything runs through the board by hand, I can shape a mix in a way that feels more like playing an instrument than clicking a mouse.

It gives me more ways to shape tone, space, and feel while keeping the performance at the center of the record.
