More often than you’d think, it’s a simple percussion part that gives the record its glue or a little extra movement (tambourines, shakers, cowbells).
Maybe you already know what you need. Maybe you don't.
Sometimes a band walks in with demos, references, and a clear vision.
Sometimes it’s just one idea, a guitar, and a song that’s still figuring itself out.
Either way, that’s the fun part.
Some artists want another creative voice in the room.
Others know exactly where they’re headed and just need someone to help them get there. I’m comfortable with both.
There is no perfect formula for making records. Every song is trying to become something.
My job is to help you figure out what that is and put it on your record.

how To start working with me

You reach out. Send me a demo, a rough recording, or even just a text message.

After that, we talk. Could be a beer, could be a Zoom call, could be a phone call. I ask a lot of questions. What’s your deadline? How many songs? How much do you want me in the songs versus just behind the board? I ask because every project is different and I want to know what you actually need, not what I assume you need.

If it feels right, we carve out some dates and get to work.
What you get
You get approved mixes that you and your band are happy with. We go back and forth until it’s right. I send rough mixes as MP3s so you can listen and react. The final approved mixes come as WAV files.
After that, I will send you all the stems. Every single raw file from the sessions. The kick, the snare, the toms, the overheads, the bass, the guitars, every track. You own all of it. If you ever want to remix the album, make alternate versions, or hand it to someone else, everything is yours.
I back everything up on four separate drives plus cloud storage. Nothing gets lost.
Recording in Person
If you’re coming to my studio in Portland, we’ll make the room feel like a place you actually want to spend the day.
For lockout sessions, I’ll stock the fridge before you arrive. Snacks. Drinks. Coffee. Water. Everything’s ready before the first microphone goes up. I want you thinking about one thing: the music.
I’ve been working with people for over two decades, and one thing has never changed:
Most people’s best work doesn’t come from feeling pressured.
That’s why I read the room, know when to keep rolling, and know when to take a break.
Once everyone’s relaxed, the music usually takes care of itself.
Remote Sessions & Travel
Already have a studio you love?
Perfect.
I’m happy to travel for sessions, work out of a lockout studio, or record wherever your project makes the most sense.
If you’ve already recorded your songs, send me the sessions or stems and we’ll build the rest together remotely.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you master records too?
I do.
I don’t master my own mixes, though.
By the time I’ve finished mixing a record, I’ve lived with those songs for a while. I think it’s important to hand them to someone with fresh ears. They’ll catch things I won’t.
I’ve mastered a handful of records and have the gear to do it when it makes sense. Most of the time, though, I send my mixes to Brian Wallace in California because I trust his work. If you’ve already got a mastering engineer you love, that’s great too.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the project.
A three-song EP is very different from a thirteen-song album, and every artist needs something a little different.
I’d rather have a conversation than put a number on a website that probably won’t fit your project anyway.

Can we work remotely?
Absolutely.
If you’ve already recorded your tracks, send me the session files or stems, and I’ll take it from there. I mix a lot of projects this way.

I’m not based in Portland. Will you travel for a project?
Absolutely.
My studio is in Portland, Oregon, but I’m happy to work wherever the project makes sense.
I’ve recorded in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, New Jersey, and Belgium, and I’d love to add a few more places to that list.
If you’ve got a studio you love, let’s make it work.
I’ve never worked with a producer before. What should I expect?
A relaxed room and good conversation.
I’ll take care of the microphones, routing, session setup, and everything technical behind the scenes.
You don’t need to think about compressors, EQ, or what reverb we’re using.
Your job is to make music.
Mine is to make sure you can focus on that.
What if my songs aren’t finished yet?
That’s completely fine.
Some artists come in with finished arrangements.
Others show up with voice memos and half-written ideas.
I’ve worked both ways, and I genuinely enjoy helping songs find their shape.
Will you tell us when something isn’t working?
Yes.
If I think another take was stronger, I’ll tell you why.
If I think a part could be simpler, I’ll say so.
I’m never trying to make your music sound like mine.
The goal is to make the strongest version of your record.
What if I don’t know all the technical stuff?
Perfect.
You don’t need to.
Whether you’ve made ten records or this is your first, you don’t have to know which compressor we’re using or how I’m setting up the microphones.
That’s my job.
You just have to show up ready to make music.
